How to Make a Hot Cocoa Board
Step 1 Prepping the Hot Cocoa Board
Place hot cocoa packets in small ramekins or bowls in the top center of the board.
You can also use hot cocoa powder, K-Cups, or Nespresso pods.
Step 2
Place shortbread cookies on the left side of the board.
Place Oreos on the right side of the board.
Step 3
Fill up the ramekins with three different flavors of chocolate chips. I chose white chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, and white chocolate for this recipe. Place them on top of the board directly under the hot cocoa packets.
Step 4
Place the President Whipped Creme at the top left and top right of the board. I used Extra Creamy and Original with this recipe.
I recommend keeping it refrigerated if you don't plan on using the board immediately.
Take it out of the fridge before using it so it's nice and cold.
Step 5
Put caramels, chopped peppermint, and chopped Andes Mints in ramekins or bowls. Place them directly below the chocolate chips.
If you don't have chopped peppermints and chopped andes mints, you can crush them with a mini food processor.
Step 6
Place marshmallows at the bottom center of the board. You can use an assortment of different size and flavor marshmallows.
Place Milano cookies on the bottom left of the board directly under the shortbread cookies and on the bottom right of the board directly under the Oreos.
Place Reeses thin chocolates to the left and right of the marshmallows. You can use your favorite chocolate. I used milk chocolate and white chocolate.
Step 7
Place milk chocolate covered pretzels on the bottom left of the board directly under the Milano cookies.
Place white chocolate covered pretzels on the bottom right of the board directly under the Milano cookies.
Step 8
Place Rolled Wafer Stick Cookies at the top of the board between the hot cocoa packets.
Add Wilton Dessert Drizzles in the middle of the ramekins or small bowls.

Best Way to Store Your Hot Cocoa Board
If you've prepared hot cocoa in advance or have leftovers, pour it into airtight containers or jars with secure lids.
How Long Will Your Hot Cocoa Board Last in the Fridge?
Store the containers in the fridge. Most hot cocoa preparations can last for up to 3-4 days when refrigerated.
Can I Freeze Your Hot Cocoa Board?
For longer storage, hot cocoa can be frozen for up to 3 months. Use freezer-safe containers, leaving some space at the top for expansion.
Note: Cocoa made with alternative milk (like coconut or almond) may have a change in texture after thawing.
How to Reheat Your Hot Cocoa Board
Pour the cocoa into a microwave-safe mug and heat in 30-second intervals, stirring in between until hot.
Transfer the cocoa to a saucepan and heat over medium-low heat, stirring continuously until it reaches the desired temperature. Avoid boiling, as this can change the texture and taste.

Hot Cocoa Board FAQs
What's the difference between hot cocoa and hot chocolate?
Hot cocoa is typically made with cocoa powder, sugar, and milk, resulting in a thinner, milkier drink with a strong cocoa flavor. Hot chocolate, on the other hand, is often made by melting actual chocolate into milk, leading to a richer, creamier, and more decadent drink.
Can I make hot cocoa with water instead of milk?
Yes, you can! However, using milk (or milk alternatives like almond, soy, or oat milk) will give the hot cocoa a creamier texture and richer flavor. If using water, you might want to add a touch more cocoa or chocolate for a stronger flavor.
What can I use if I don't have cocoa powder?
If you're out of cocoa powder, you can melt chocolate bars or chocolate chips as a substitute. The taste and consistency might be richer than regular hot cocoa made with cocoa powder.
Is there caffeine in hot cocoa?
Yes, cocoa powder contains a small amount of caffeine. However, the amount is typically much less than what's found in coffee or tea. If caffeine sensitivity is a concern, look for caffeine-free cocoa alternatives.
How can I make my hot cocoa less bitter?
Cocoa is naturally bitter, but you can balance it out by adding sweeteners like sugar, honey, or maple syrup. Additionally, a pinch of salt or a splash of vanilla extract can enhance the flavors and cut down on bitterness.
Are there dairy-free versions of hot cocoa?
Absolutely! You can substitute traditional cow's milk with almond, soy, oat, coconut, or any other plant-based milk. There are also vegan chocolate and cocoa powders available for a completely dairy-free experience.
Can I add spices to my hot cocoa?
Definitely! Popular choices include cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, and even a pinch of chili powder for a kick. Spices can elevate the flavor profile and add a unique twist to your beverage.
Is white chocolate a good option for hot cocoa?
Yes, white chocolate can be melted into milk to create a creamy white hot chocolate. While the flavor profile is different from traditional cocoa, it offers a sweet and indulgent alternative.
How can I make my hot cocoa thicker?
To achieve a thicker consistency, you can use heavy cream or a mixture of milk and cream. Another method is to create a slurry with cornstarch and cold milk, then mix it into the hot cocoa, allowing it to cook until thickened.
Is hot cocoa gluten-free?
Pure cocoa powder is naturally gluten-free. However, be cautious of additives or mix-ins, especially in pre-packaged hot cocoa mixes, which may contain gluten or be cross-contaminated. Always check labels if gluten is a concern.
